Mike Hodges

Full-Stack Developer · Orlando, FL

I've been building software since 2000.

Twenty-six years of it, on and off — and well over ten years of hands-on experience across web applications, data systems, and connected hardware. From Oracle APEX dashboards for the City of Orlando to ESP32 devices I design and build myself.

Things I build

Connected hardware.

ESP32 devices that take real data and turn it into something you can see and act on — no app required.

Sugar Cube

ESP32 · RGB LED · Dexcom / Libre

A glowing glucose monitor. A single RGB LED reads your Dexcom or Libre and shows where you are right now as ambient color — no phone, no app to check. Phone-based setup and a 3D-printed frosted shell.

ESP32FastLEDCGM APIs

HydroSense

ESP32 · ESPHome · Hardware I designed & built

A hydroponic controller built from the board up. Three peristaltic pumps dose pH up, pH down, and nutrient on demand, with a TDS meter and sensors feeding a live dashboard. Custom 3D-printed parts and six-plus months growing real lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and onions.

HR Zone Pro

Wear OS · BLE · ESP32 TFT

An external heart-rate zone display for athletes. A Wear OS app streams your heart rate over Bluetooth to an ESP32 with a TFT screen, so your zone is glanceable on the handlebars while you ride.

Data & enterprise

Web apps & data systems.

Full-stack web applications, mapping, and business intelligence for cities and enterprises.

Orlando Building Energy dashboard built in Oracle APEX.

Orlando Building Energy — Oracle APEX

Oracle APEX · PL/SQL · Leaflet

A redesigned benchmarking app tracking energy and water use across Orlando's largest buildings, with a custom Leaflet plugin that sizes and colors map points by Energy Star rating via APEX AJAX callbacks.

Green Works Orlando

JavaScript · Leaflet · The original build

The first Green Works benchmarking site — JavaScript and Leaflet filtering JSON energy data across the city's biggest buildings. Built to City of Orlando guidelines; contributed to Orlando's "Green City" designation.

California Federal Court System

2004–2012 · Five districts

Staff entered decisions, calendars, and opinions through web forms into a SQL Server database; whenever a record changed, only the affected pages were re-generated as static HTML. On the slow servers of the era, it made the site exceptionally fast — and it stayed in service for years.

About

Software, a soldering iron, and a habit of finishing things.

I've been writing software on and off since 2000 — over ten years of hands-on experience building web applications, software, and database systems that meet real client needs. I hold a B.S. in Computer Technology & Software Development, and my most recent client work was for the City of Orlando.

Lately I'm as happy with a soldering iron as a code editor: designing ESP32 devices, printing enclosures, and shipping small hardware that does one useful thing well.
